First Birthday

It's been a year since I started this blog! Time for a cup of tea and some cake to celebrate!

So far this year I've just been using this blog as a handy place to keep a record of the best freeware I've found, and links to my favourite websites. I've recommended it to my friends as they often ask me where they can find good free software or resources for various things, and if anyone else found this blog and enjoyed it as well - then all the better!

Maybe this year I'll use it as more of an outlet for my personal "ponderings" as well... who knows... time will tell! :)

Free Serif Software

Serif Software "are giving the people what they want: Software With Imagination... for Free!

That's right, 100% completely free software. No gimmicks. It's yours for free. Download today and start using the most user friendly software around
." - End of official website blurb!

5 software packages are available for download -
* PagePlus - Desktop Publishing
* PhotoPlus - Photo and Image Editing
* WebPlus - Web Site Design & Publishing
* DrawPlus - Graphic Design and Vector Drawing
* 3DPlus - 3D Animation and Modeling

Independent reviews have spoken favourably of these freeware applications. Pageplus appears to be the only freeware desktop publishing program available on the web so if you're looking for one this seems to be a good program to start with.

For a really good photo and image editing program I prefer Photofiltre over Photoplus but they are both very good programs.

Starfall - Free learn-to-read website

"The Starfall learn-to-read website is offered free as a public service. Primarily designed for first grade, Starfall.com is also useful for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and second grade. Starfall is perfect for Home Schooling."

My kids go to this website often as they absolutely love it. The lessons are well thought out with a lot of clever interactive flash animations that are extremely intuitive for ages 3 and up!

I highly recommend it!

Photofiltre - Free Digital Image Editor

This is what Robin Good at Master New Media has to say about Photofiltre:

"This is the best free digital image editor for Windows PCs that is available out there bar none. I don't know how I have been missing this tool, but you can be sure that, if you are a non-technical user, this is the only software you will need to do 99% of your digital image editing tasks.

Photofiltre is a perfect tool for anyone with some basic familiarity with digital imaging who wants to avoid getting into the complexity and price tag of
Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.

While for many years I have strongly recommended and used IrfanView (free) for most of my basic digital image editing tasks and Serif Photo Plus 5.5 (free), I must admit that I have switched to Photofiltre in no time at all. I would sincerely recommend Photofiltre to any non-technical user needing to work with digital images. At this price level there is really little else that can do this much.

Highly Recommended."

For the full review, you can read it here.

Free Images and Visuals

I was going to post about the best websites available to find royalty free images and photos, but then Robin Good wrote a great article that provides a comprehensive and detailed list:

I also recommend having a look at these photo blogs. While the photos aren't normally royalty free, they ARE very good:

http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/ - a random selection of some of the interesting things discovered on Flickr within the last 7 days.

http://photo-a-day.blogspot.com/ - A picture from each day of Tim Halberg's life from August 31, 2005 onwards.
