Ghostscript, Ghostview and GSview
I needed this software recently when I had received a corrupt eps file and needed to be able to convert the file to another graphic image file format. Irfanview couldn't open the file, but Ghostscript and ghostview could. A handy "Ace" to have up your sleeve!

Star Wars III Revenge of the Sith - Palpatine
This film poses an uncanny depiction of what's actually happening in the world today.
Click on the image below to read the full story about Palpatine's rise to power in the Galactic Republic.
Here are some points from this that I would like to focus on:
- Palpatine secretly orders the Trade Federation to invade Naboo.
- Naboo's leader, Queen Amidala, rushes to Palpatine for aid.
- The two plead to the Senate for intervention, but are stalemated by Trade Federation filibustering.
- Queen Amidala acts upon Palpatine's suggestion, and calls for a Vote of No Confidence in the Republic's leadership.
- Chancellor Valorum is voted out and Palpatine becomes Chancellor.
- Despite Palpatine's promises of reform, the Republic continues to be attacked.
- Palpatine orders Dooku to organise the creation of a clone army on the Republic's behalf.
- Much later, Palpatine orders Count Dooku to lead a Separatist movement against the Republic with an army of droids.
- The Republic need a military and are pleasantly surprised to find that they are equipped to fight with an army of clones.
- Palpatine requires the authority to activate the Republic's newly forged army.
- Senators loyal to Palpatine motion that the Chancellor be given emergency powers to deal with the Separatist threat.
- The Clone Wars are a sham, a part of an intricate plan concocted by Palpatine as he secretly holds authority over both sides of the conflict.
- Palpatine's term as Chancellor ends during the rise of the Separatists, but that crisis allows him to extend his stay in office and enact executive decree after executive decree. He adds amendments to the constitution funneling more power to him, effectively circumventing the bureaucracy of the Senate.
- The public and the Senate willingly give up their rights and freedoms in the name of security.
- Palpatine promises that under his guidance, the war would be won, and the Republic would be safe.
- Palpatine secretly orders General Grievous to lead more Separatist forces in an assault against the republic.
- Palpatine architects his own abduction by General Grievous.
- The Jedi order's finest heroes, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, are dispatched to rescue Palpatine, defeating Grievous and Dooku along the way.
- Palpatine reveals himself as the Sith Lord to Anakin and persuades him to turn to the dark side. Anakin becomes Darth Vader.
- Palpatine enacts "Order 66", a coded command to the clone army on the various distant battlefronts, causing the clone army to kill the Jedi knights in cold blood.
- Palpatine gives a stirring speech to the Galactic Senate of how he narrowly escaped a treacherous Jedi rebellion. He assures the Republic that his resolve had not faltered. He had routed out the treachery that had entangled the Republic in the Clone Wars. He would cleanse the corruption from the bloated bureaucracy and reform it, as a new, more powerful, more secure institution.
- Palpatine declares himself Emperor, institutes a military build-up unprecedented in galactic history and creates a New Order: a Galactic Empire ruled by tyranny.
- During the Galactic Civil War, Palpatine disbands the Imperial Senate, and passes control down to the regional governors and the military.
The lines that I have underlined show what the Bush administration has already publicly done in their so called "War against Terrorism".
If you have watched any of the videos that can be downloaded from the 'New Vision Society' website (as shown in my post on 2nd Dec), you might believe that more lines should be underlined!
Star Wars III is a very timely film!
I wonder... could George Lucas forsee this when he started the Star Wars saga in the 70's?

Superman vs Jesus
"They can be a great people Kal-El if they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all...(snip) I have sent them you... my only son!"
John 3:16 - the most famous scripture in the Bible says:
"For God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten son. That whosoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
In this teaser trailer, Superman is portrayed as a messianic figure, a possible saviour for the human race.
In his new book "Comic Book Character: Unleashing the Hero in Us All", David A. Zimmerman explores complex characters like Superman and Batman, Spider-Man and the X-Men, to uncover their cultural significance as models of moral character, virtue and heroism. Zimmerman shows how these iconic tales of good versus evil tap into our universal yearnings for justice and righteousness...
When asked "How are Superman and Jesus alike?" He states,
If I were to cast Superman in the Gospels, he would play Pontius Pilate: a guy with supreme power but who inevitably acquiesces to the will of the crowd and commits the most tragically evil act in history—the execution of the Son of God. Jesus and Superman are similar in that they’re both super-men—one raised as a human but endowed with powers by virtue of being an alien, the other literally the God-Man, but while Superman exists to advance an industry and maintain the status quo, Jesus seeks to draw us back into fellowship with our Creator. They’re superficially very similar, but ultimately their goals are irreconcilable.
I personally believe that this movie trailer communicates a yearning that has been placed in all of us by God himself.
We are spirits first of all, with a conscience (mind), placed in our earthly bodies. It is the innermost parts of our beings, our spirits, that yearn to be reconciled to our creator, and this can only be done through Jesus - the God given mediator between God and mankind.
This need for spiritual reconciliation with our creator, and a need for a saviour to show us the way, is often seen in our creative expressions, just like the messianic reference shown here in the Superman trailer.
Lemon and Paeroa
Currently the L&P website is full of funny references to New Zealand culture, also known as Kiwiana. It's full of UGLY humour (which I just love), and other references to life in NZ in the 70's. There's some great wallpapers and mpg's to download of "hunky retro" Kiwi males strutting their stuff for the ladies.
The website has flash animation which can take a while to view on dial-up, so here are some of the direct links to their wallpapers and mpgs.
Brilliantly Funny!!!

BitPim - Free CDMA phone software
It is still under development so not all features are available. Have a look at the website and read through it before deciding whether to run with this freeware version or buying the commercially available products DataPilot or SnapSync.
Free Logos
7-zip - Freeware File Compression
Supported formats include:
Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR.
Unpacking only: RAR, CAB, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM and DEB.
For ZIP and GZIP formats 7-Zip provides a compression ratio that is 2-10% better than the ratios provided by PKZip and WinZip.
I needed a freeware winzip alternative that had a nice looking interface and also allowed for RAR support as well, and this was it. A great little program that's a small size to download as well.

New Vision Society
This is how I felt when I first looked at New Vision Society. Their website starts with a flash animation with some of the following wording:
Almost everything you know of this world has been a big lie.
I can only show you the door.
You are the one that has to walk through it.
Time has come for you to know the truth.
There's a strange thing about this website as well. Different PC's see different html pages once the animation has finished. One page features links to many videos on conspiracy theories, while the other has a more corporate look to it aiming to sell free electricity technologies. The direct link to this version is here.
If you don't see the webpages with links to their videos, then the videos are all here.
Food for thought...
now wheres that red pill gone???

First Birthday

So far this year I've just been using this blog as a handy place to keep a record of the best freeware I've found, and links to my favourite websites. I've recommended it to my friends as they often ask me where they can find good free software or resources for various things, and if anyone else found this blog and enjoyed it as well - then all the better!
Maybe this year I'll use it as more of an outlet for my personal "ponderings" as well... who knows... time will tell! :)

Free Serif Software
That's right, 100% completely free software. No gimmicks. It's yours for free. Download today and start using the most user friendly software around." - End of official website blurb!
5 software packages are available for download -
* PagePlus - Desktop Publishing
* PhotoPlus - Photo and Image Editing
* WebPlus - Web Site Design & Publishing
* DrawPlus - Graphic Design and Vector Drawing
* 3DPlus - 3D Animation and Modeling
Independent reviews have spoken favourably of these freeware applications. Pageplus appears to be the only freeware desktop publishing program available on the web so if you're looking for one this seems to be a good program to start with.
For a really good photo and image editing program I prefer Photofiltre over Photoplus but they are both very good programs.
Starfall - Free learn-to-read website
My kids go to this website often as they absolutely love it. The lessons are well thought out with a lot of clever interactive flash animations that are extremely intuitive for ages 3 and up!
I highly recommend it!

Photofiltre - Free Digital Image Editor
"This is the best free digital image editor for Windows PCs that is available out there bar none. I don't know how I have been missing this tool, but you can be sure that, if you are a non-technical user, this is the only software you will need to do 99% of your digital image editing tasks.
Photofiltre is a perfect tool for anyone with some basic familiarity with digital imaging who wants to avoid getting into the complexity and price tag of Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.
While for many years I have strongly recommended and used IrfanView (free) for most of my basic digital image editing tasks and Serif Photo Plus 5.5 (free), I must admit that I have switched to Photofiltre in no time at all. I would sincerely recommend Photofiltre to any non-technical user needing to work with digital images. At this price level there is really little else that can do this much.
Highly Recommended."
For the full review, you can read it here.
Photofiltre can be downloaded for free here:

The Goon Show
The Goons included Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe. They burst onto the radio with surreal storylines, absurd logic, puns, catchphrases and groundbreaking sound effects. They ridiculed the pomposity of establishment and laughed at the stupidity of the human condition.
Characters such as Ned Seagoon, Eccles, Bluebottle, Major Bloodnok, Minnie Bannister, Henry Crun, Grytpype-Thynne and Moriarty all helped to create an alternative and ludicrous view of the world.
Pictures, scripts, MP3's and videos are available at these websites. Enjoy!

Index.dat Suite
Index.dat Suite allows you to view and delete index.dat files, temporary internet files, temp files, cookies and internet explorer history on your system.
Index.dat files contain information on every website that you have ever visited. Microsoft have never given an explanation as to what these files actually do, but they can potentially be a source of information to others should your machine be hacked. If you do banking over the internet on a regular basis I would definitely recommend giving these files a regular clean as well.

Porn Blockers/Child Safe Content Filters
Naomi is an Internet content filtering program, intended for families and parents in particular. It constantly monitors all Internet connections for inappropriate materials, and immediately closes down the browser if encountered. The programs considerations include obscene or violent contents; pornography and erotism in the form of images or texts, as well as sites that popularize drugs, gambling, terrorism, hate propaganda and more. The program uses a built-in filter list (which cannot be modified) as well as heuristic scanning and semantic analysis of web pages and links. It recognizes more than 10 major languages and supports the ICRA labeling system. The interface is password protected to prevent unauthorized disabling of the filter. Naomi`s biggest strength is that it is completely fool-proof and fully automatic, with no additional configurations (other than picking a password), it supports any browser or Internet application and does not change any of your settings - on the downside, it does not offer any control over the filters. The filtering worked well during tests.
Parental Filter is a specialized parental control filter that enables you to block porn from your web browser. It uses a built-in database of web sites that are blocked, as well as a list of keywords that it scans for on web pages, and blocks them if a they are found. You can specify a list of sites that the user will be redirected to instead, and also customize the list of blocked sites and keywords. Parental Filter provides a password protected interface, can run fully automatic in the background. The program is very effective and works well.
B Gone is a content filter for parents, children, and anyone else wishing to keep their internet experience pleasant. This program allows you to block site's, based on keywords in the browsers caption bar. The interface, and program is password protected using our own custom encryption routine, designed and written specifically for this program. This program is great for those wishing to keep their children away from porn sites, or simply preventing porn popup's appearing when entering or exiting certain site's. It could also be used (and is more than capable), to prevent someone accessing a certain website, or group of website's.
File Sharing Sentinel is free Parental Control software designed to block file sharing software such as Kazaa, Morpheus, Bearshare, etc. Protect your children from predators lurking in file sharing networks, also prevent them from being exposed to thousands of pornographic files. File sharing can be costly, the music industry is suing users of file sharing software for copyright infringement. Computer viruses found on file sharing networks can damage or destroy your computer. File Sharing Sentinel prevents spyware from installing on your computer.
SafeGuard Content Cleaner is a system cleaner that includes increased filtering and cleaning capabilities to detect and protect against all the latest and most dangerous types of graphics, pornography, content, and files.

What to do with an old 486 PC!!!
First of all download and install FreeDOS. FreeDOS aims to be a completely free 100% MS-DOS compatible operating system.
Then get SEAL a 32-bit graphical user interface (GUI) for DOS. It supports many advanced features, such as a dynamic linking system (XDL), sound and other multimedia functions (SFA), multilingual support, and more!
As an alternative to SEAL try Quikmenu3. It's nagware but it's a great little DOS GUI that allows you to set up buttons to launch all your favorite DOS programs. QuikMenu also contains a full assortment of utilities (including a powerful file manager for copying, moving, deleting and renaming files and directories; calculator; phone/modem dialer and database; calendar; macro recorder; ASCII text editor; and more).
Then go to DOSgames.com to download and play over 400 of your favourite DOS games, free!
Prepare for a massive 80's Flashback!!!
Image Viewers and Management Tools
Irfanview: I've mentioned this app before in an earlier entry but it's just great software that is probably the most popular and feature packed free image viewer for Windows. It has been around for many years and keeps getting better.
Some features of IrfanView: Preview option, Drag & Drop support, fast directory view (fast moving through directory), slideshow, batch conversion, print option, change the color depth, scan support, cut/crop and many many more.
Supported file formats: JPG/JPEG, GIF, BMP, DIB, RLE, PCX, PNG, TIFF, TGA, RAS/SUN, ICO, AVI, WAV, MID, RMI, WMF, EMF, PBM, PGM, PPM, IFF/LBM, PSD, CPT, MPG/MPEG, MOV and Photo-CD(Overview Photo-CD support) as well as Flash/Shockwave format. All this for (currently) only 874kb.
I LOVE this program because it's lightweight and extremely fast! I've also found that it will open troublesome image files that some of the professional graphics programs can't. I also use it for creating slideshow playlists. The great thing about creating a playlist is (like an audio playlist on Winamp or Media Player) files can be chosen from different directories and drives and sorted into the required order. Great for use with a data projector at parties and public services.
FastStone Image Viewer is an image browser, viewer, converter and editor with an easy to use interface and a nice array of features, that include resizing, renaming, cropping, color adjustments, watermarks and more. It also includes an intuitive full-screen mode that provides quick access to EXIF information and thumbnail browser via hidden toolbars that emerge when you touch the edge of your screen with the mouse. Other features include a high quality magnifier and built-in slideshow with 60+ transitional effects, as well as lossless JPEG transitions, drop shadow effects, image frames, scanner support, histogram and much more. FastStone Image Viewer supports all major graphic formats including BMP, JPEG, JPEG 2000, GIF, PNG, PCX, TIFF, WMF, ICO and TGA as well as digital RAW formats (.CRW, .NEF).
This viewer/editor is a gem! I have never encountered such a superb, well-rounded viewer/editor before. The coolest thing is that the menus pop up when you move your curser to edge of the photo you are viewing. No other program does that. It is simply a joy to work with so many features. All other programs in this FastStone series are highly recommendable as well. Get this!!!
